What is the most interesting part of your current project?
I would be hard-pressed to say anything other than the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System (CAPS) since that has been where I have focused the majority of my time and effort at Advanced Space. This technology has the opportunity to revolutionize how navigation at the Moon and beyond works for the future of space exploration by reducing navigation and communication burdens on Earth ground stations with its decentralized and cooperative approach. Developing a totally novel technology is always an interesting project; the fact that we currently have CAPSTONE up there at the Moon gathering real data in support of this technology makes it an engineer’s dream. What is the most interesting part of your current project?
It’s a Space Situational Awareness (SSA) project to observe activity around the Moon and in the Earth-Moon corridor, which is a really hot topic for government and commercial entities these days. It’s also interesting to interact with so many partners: we have a subcontract for a [spacecraft] bus provider; another for the bus propulsion system; we’re purchasing the communications system; our bus sub has a sub for the imaging payload while we’re providing our unique expertise on cislunar navigation, ops, systems, and comms; and all of this has to come together to accomplish the mission. Not to mention it’s super cool to be the prime and work directly with the customer on this contract! (more…)

What has been your favorite project at Advanced Space and why?
This may be a common answer, but I’d have to say CAPSTONE™. It was an incredible opportunity to become the Mission Design Lead for a Moon mission just three years after finishing my undergraduate degree. That role is something I envisioned I’d get to do maybe a decade into my career. This unique opportunity really solidified that I had made the right choice in abandoning grad school plans and moving across the country to join a small company of less than 10 people. It’s also amazing to be part of something much bigger, knowing that CAPSTONE is part of Artemis and is helping to pave the way to get humans back on the surface of the Moon.
